The word ‘Gharana’ or tradition is very important in North Indian Classical music. Those who learn music as an hobby to those accomplished artistes, also have to know what a Gharana or tradition or discipline means. A Gharana prospers when there is rigorous riyaaz put in by the artiste and only then it has a recognition.
The academics of the Gharana is a base, but the artistes embellish and enrich the Gharana by contributing to the style, aesthetics and melodious presentation.
As a result the artiste in a way is responsible to cultivate appreciation of music amongst the listeners and thus propagate music as true devotees. Hence they can be described as ‘SwaraNayak’.
